NBER Study Reveals Bitcoin Is Over Concentrated And Vulnerable To A 51% Attack

An in-depth study by the National Bureau of Economic Research, (NBER) has revealed that the bulk of Bitcoins is owned by a few individuals. The research team utilized a methodology that involved splitting addresses between intermediaries and individuals, which generated interesting results despite the difficulty of the undertaking.
Uit het onderzoek bleek dat 10,000 wallets de controle hebben over meer dan 6,000,000 BTC, wat een derde is van alle cryptocurrency in omloop. Verder zoekend ontdekte de NBER dat de leidende 1,000 investeerders in het bezit waren van ongeveer 3,000,000 BTC, waarbij de statistieken steeds hoger op de ladder werden geconcentreerd.

De trend van concentratie kon ook worden ontdekt bij cryptocurrency-mijnwerkers, waar de leidende 10% van de miners 90% van de activageneratie voor hun rekening nam, terwijl slechts een fractie verantwoordelijk was voor 50%. Ondanks het schijnbaar gedecentraliseerde karakter van het netwerk, schetst het onderzoek van NBER een ander beeld.
De keerzijde van de zware concentratie van miners volgens het onderzoek is de vatbaarheid voor een 51% aanval op het netwerk. Dit soort aanvallen vindt plaats wanneer een aanvaller de meerderheid van de controle krijgt over de hashkracht van de blockchain.

Although it’s hard to tell who the largest holders of Bitcoin are, some entities stand out from the pack as the biggest whales. For organizations, MicroStrategy is the largest entity with an geschatte 111,042 BTC met een waarde van meer dan $ 6 miljard en geen tekenen van vertraging bij acquisities.
Bitcoin’s founder, Satoshi Nakamoto is said to have over 1 million BTC in his possession which would make him the largest whale. Other noteworthy individuals include the Winklevoss brothers, Barry Silbert, Tim Draper, Michael Novogratz, and Micree Zhan, the owner of Bitmain.
Prior to China’s cryptocurrency crackdown, the country accounted for over 50% of Bitcoin’s hash rate but with the tide turning, America now has the highest concentration of Bitcoin mijnwerkers. Kazachstan en Rusland komen op de tweede en derde plaats.
